Damascus Rose – Handmade Syrian Backgammon & Chess Board

Named for the Damask rose that gave the region its scent for centuries, this board carries the same warmth in its wood and mother-of-pearl inlay. Closed, it reads as a piece of art — a mosaic panel you could just as easily lean against a shelf as play on. Open it, and it becomes a full backgammon and chess board, ready for a game with family or friends.

Each board is handcrafted in the Damascene marquetry tradition, where thin strips of dyed wood and mother-of-pearl are cut, bundled and set by hand into a walnut base, then finished with a hand-rubbed natural shellac for a deep, glossy shine. Because every panel is assembled piece by piece, no two boards are ever fully identical — yours will carry small, natural variations that come only with handwork, not a machine.
