Father’s Day, Herrentag & Ascension Day in Germany: Why Berlin Celebrates So Wildly

Father’s Day in Germany, also known as Herrentag, Men’s Day, or Ascension Day, is one of Berlin’s most unique public holidays. Every year, streets, parks, and lakes fill with groups of friends, wagons full of drinks, music, and outdoor celebrations.

But why are all these events celebrated on the same day?

For many newcomers in Berlin, the connection between a religious holiday and the city’s famous beer celebrations can feel confusing. Here’s a simple explanation of the history, traditions, and modern celebrations behind this special day in Germany.

What Is the Difference Between Father’s Day, Herrentag & Ascension Day?

Although people use these names interchangeably in Germany, they originally come from different traditions:

Ascension Day (Christi Himmelfahrt)

Ascension Day is a Christian holiday celebrated 40 days after Easter. According to Christian tradition, it marks the day Jesus Christ ascended to heaven after the resurrection.

The celebration dates back to the 4th and 5th centuries and became an important religious event across Europe.

Herrentag (Men’s Day) in Germany

Over time, especially around Berlin and eastern Germany, Ascension Day also became known as Herrentag or Men’s Day.

Since the 19th century, groups of men celebrated the holiday with:

  • Outdoor trips
  • Parades and wagons
  • Beer and local drinks
  • Gatherings with friends

This tradition slowly became more social than religious, especially in Berlin.

Is Father’s Day in Germany the Same as in America?

Not exactly.

Modern Father’s Day originally began in the United States in 1910, when Louise Dodd wanted to honor her father, who raised six children alone after the death of his wife.

The idea spread quickly and later arrived in Europe during the 1930s through advertising campaigns. In Germany and other European countries, the celebration became connected to Ascension Day because of the symbolic relationship between the “Father” and the religious event.

Why Is Father’s Day in Berlin So Famous?

Berlin has developed one of Germany’s most recognisable Herrentag traditions.

People celebrate with:

  • Beer gardens and parks
  • Bicycles and decorated wagons
  • Barbecues and picnics
  • Day trips around lakes and nature
  • Music and street gatherings

The celebration became especially popular in eastern Germany during the 20th century and continues today as one of the biggest outdoor social events of the year.

Is Herrentag Still a Religious Holiday?

Technically, yes. Ascension Day remains an official Christian public holiday in Germany.

However, for many people in Berlin today, the holiday is more about:

  • Spending time with friends
  • Relaxing outdoors
  • Enjoying spring weather
  • Social gatherings and celebrations

The religious meaning is still important for many families and churches, while others simply enjoy the long holiday and festive atmosphere.

Why Is Beer So Connected to the Celebration?

Historians believe the strong connection between beer culture in Berlin and Herrentag grew with the expansion of breweries and working class traditions in the 19th century.

Over time, beer became a central part of the celebrations, much like wine and arak are traditionally connected to celebrations in many Levantine cultures.

Today, many people also celebrate with:

A Holiday Full of Tradition and Debate

While Herrentag remains popular, it also receives criticism every year because of heavy drinking, public disturbances and increased accidents, many people now call for safer and more responsible celebrations.

Like any festival, the best celebrations are the ones enjoyed responsibly and respectfully.
